Susan B. Anthony Coin: A Historical Summary

During President Jimmy Carter’s term as president, legislation for the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was passed. On October 10, 1978 Law 95-447 was passed.

In 1979, the first coin was minted. Frank Gasparro, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint designed the coin in its entireness.

This coin was the first time a portrait of a real woman appeared on a U.S. Currency coin. Lady Liberty, for example, solely depicts a figurative lady.

However, Susan B. Anthony was a real woman of flesh. One who pioneered in equality. And ultimately, the women’s rights movement.

Susan B Anthony Coin: Significance

The Susan B. Anthony $1 Coin at first was set to be a replacement to the Eisenhower dollar. However, the U.S. Mint had high hopes that ultimately this coin would replace the $1 Washington Note. Only because it is less expensive to mint a coin than to mint a paper note.

But for this to occur, high circulation of the coin would have to happen. Which, unfortunately for the U.S. Mint, failed to happen. In fact, quite the opposite happened. The general public actually rejected the coin.

Why? Simple. It was easily confused with a quarter. Thus, production stopped in 1981.

Susan B. Anthony Coin: Re-Issuance

20 years from initial minting, the Susan B. Anthony Coin was minted once again. The U.S. Post Office requested the coin to be reissued. In 1999 the U.S. Mint complied. However, it was never minted again.
